A fascinating book called Journey of Souls, by Dr. Michael Newton, is incredibly revealing on this point. I am a metaphysician at heart. The information in this book shifted my entire perspective on life – why I am here, what constitutes right action, what my life purpose might be, and so much else. I then went on to have a similar regression done by one of his early students, on the advice of my spirit guides, and I learned so much I don’t know where to begin….
Most people report only having 2 or 3 choices, and one soul with a lot of urgent lessons was only given one option (we can always decline to go at all, though most of us prefer the speed with which learning occurs on Earth). The vast astral super-computer your spirit guides use narrows the life choices to a handful that will challenge you with the issues you want to work on, and you are only shown brief previews of what will happen in each life before making your decision. Since this confluence of appropriate learning experiences is only available in a tiny number of potential lives, there are many factors that you do not get to choose. For example: I can stop being pissed off about my weight problem because I chose a family with enormous weight issues. It was a fine choice for many other reasons, and one can only fight genetics so far. I already know that I was excessively thin in my most recent past life, and I now realize that my only failing today as regards my weight is in placing such undue importance on it. The lesson: it’s mainly genetics; get over it. Focus on something important.
Second, we deliberately choose to put ourselves through hell on Earth because we are ambitious lovers of learning when we are “over there.” So you can stop blaming yourself for that, too. No life is a punishment – it’s a challenging role-playing game that sounded like great fun when we picked it. We were determined to complete our quest, and many of us (myself included, I’m sure) piled on the challenges in our ambitious, between-lives belief that we could do it all and get it all over with at once (and of course we can – we just struggle with it on the Earth plane). We also choose how much of our total soul energy we want to bring down with us (we leave some behind with our higher self, and there are advantages and disadvantages to the various options). Sometimes we don’t allocate enough soul energy to deal with it all (chronic fatigue syndrome, anyone?).
In this superhuman state of mind we frequently overestimate our ability to cope so, again, stop criticizing yourself for being exhausted and burned out. It is what it is, and it’s not because you’re a total failure. Take it easy, take as much pressure off yourself as you can, and remember, there is no winning or losing. It’s all a process and we have forever in which to resolve our issues. This is only one life among thousands.
Third, our families are vehicles of learning and stewards of our young bodies, but we forged mutually beneficial pre-life agreements with them. Stop feeling guilty if you do not to want to spend all your time – or any of your time – with family members. You don’t owe them, and they don’t owe you. And if you misjudge the situation, you have an infinite amount of time to get it right in other lives.
Pre-life agreements can also include bosses, friends, and lovers. If you feel irresistibly attracted to a person or situation, even knowing it may not be healthy, you can be pretty darn sure that is because you agreed to participate in it pre-life. So please stop blaming yourself for getting involved with that drunk twenty years ago, ok? The main thing is, what did you learn? Do you continue to get involved with drunks, or did you learn on the first try?
Fourth, those folks with seemingly perfect lives are having a reward life. They just wanted to enjoy Earth, with all its sensory delights, and relax. It’s a form of vacation. We all do this occasionally. Stop comparing yourself to them – they are not somehow doing everything right while you are doing it all wrong. They are not better at making life choices than you. There is no connection and no point of comparison.
Fifth, our life purposes are rarely dramatic, and they often do not include a specific occupation. Many, many folks find out that their life purpose is something vague and high-minded, like bringing positive energy to whatever they do, and their occupation is so secondary as to be nearly meaningless. Being a janitor is every bit as useful as being a CEO, and may be a far more appropriate vehicle for learning a particular lesson.
The list of fascinating details from between lives goes on and on. The basic message is that we choose our circumstances, and we need to stop blaming our current selves for the deliberate choices made by our pre-life selves for the purposes of learning.
We also have to surrender the illusion of control. We chose to step into a stage play. There is a basic script with thousands of other cast members, but our role is largely improv, and all we can control is how we handle the challenges presented to us, not the existence of the challenges themselves.
Dr. Newton’s studies originated when he hypnotically regressed a client, purely by accident, to a moment that was identified as being between lifetimes, in what we might call heaven. According to Dr. Newton’s years of research, we move either slowly or quickly (depending upon how evolved our soul is) through the immediate post-death process – meeting relatives, resting, getting oriented, and so on. Then, no matter who we are, we are led to a temple-like building where we meet a “council of elders” that helps us perform a “life review” to determine what we succeeded in learning and where we failed to learn. We then move on to additional schooling and, eventually, the decision to reincarnate again – or not. The most highly-evolved souls eventually stop incarnating and start working entirely from the other side, other than an occasional foray to Earth on a volunteer mission.
My spirit guides encouraged me to participate in the process and helped me choose a local hypnotherapist originally trained by Dr. Newton. Interestingly, the experience felt nothing like my conception of hypnosis.
I did not feel “hypnotized” in the sense of going deep or feeling totally out of it– instead, I was highly energized and so much information poured through me that I couldn’t talk fast enough or keep track of all the info I was being fed. I have done channeling on and off since the mid-1980s and this was definitely a big fat good ol’ channeling experience. The hypnotherapist became a nearly silent facilitator, and I think I was led to him because I was easily able to override his suggestions and stay on track with what my spirit guides wanted to talk about instead.
I was amazed by all the very specific advice for my present life that came through. I seemed to be visiting the space between lives in real time and having a conversation about current events with my spirit guides, my higher self, and the council of elders. Many of the regressions performed by Dr. Newton review what happened between earlier lives; however, a final collection put together by hypnotists he trained all seem to be about their clients’ current life. Apparently, even the process has evolved.
The insights were never ending, but since the session lasted three hours, I can’t share it all here. When I first walked out, I was shaking my head in confusion and overwhelm – had I spent all that money for nothing? But eventually I received the recording of the session (it is advised that the hypnotherapist hold back on sending it for several weeks, which in retrospect seemed very effective to me) and I was totally amazed by the substantial amount of info. Clearly, being awake and energized didn’t help me remember anything.
Ultimately, I think every last one of us should hone our channeling skills, cut out the middle man, and find our own truths through direct communication with our higher selves and spirit guides. In lieu of that, a reading from an experienced channeler can help us stay on track. One of my skills as a psychic is that I am a natural channel, but I tend to question information I get for myself. Reading for others is far easier – the tarot and oracle cards are little prompts that get me started, and then I am off to the races. Like the famous medium John Edward, I find myself speaking so fast I can’t move my tongue quickly enough (or typing that fast, in some cases) and the channeled information just pours out.
Clearly, my next blog post needs to be advice on how to teach yourself to channel! It represents a significant leap beyond divination techniques such as tarot cards, runes, tea leaves, scrying, etc.
If you are curious what Dr. Newton’s clients have to say about our soulmates (yes, we all have one), then read my previous blog post here.
Until next time, brightest blessings and happy holidays to all – and don’t forget to read Journey of Souls! If you like that book, then you will absolutely love all the additional details in his second book, Destiny of Souls!
